Nichols School is fortunate to provide library access to students at both the Middle and Upper schools. The Philip M. B. Boocock '22 Upper School Library underwent considerable renovation during the 2000-2001 school year. Integrated with the 20,000-volume basement stack area are the periodical and reference areas in the Reading Room, the video collection in the Inner library, and the online information access facility: nineteen new IBM desktop computers running Microsoft Windows 2000, Office 2000 and connected to the Internet at T1 speed.
The Middle School Library, currently holding 10,000 volumes, moved into its new space in the new Nichols Middle School in the fall of 2001. Students have access to fifteen computer terminals with similar configurations as those in the Upper School.
The libraries subscribe to an online package of traditional and contemporary periodicals. In addition, a number of online databases, containing research materials in both periodical and book forms, are available to Nichols students. A networked catalogue of holdings and a centralized intranet web site provide instant access for all users to all library resources.
One full-time librarian staffs the Nichols Middle School library, while the Upper School employs the Director of Libraries and Academic Technologies, one full- and one part-time librarian. Library staff maintain and disperse the library holdings in a current and orderly fashion, collaborate with instructors on curricular and co-curricular projects, and assist students with all facets of scholarly research.
